Savannah Léa Havrankova-Garnier, 9 years old and took her first ballet class in Perth, Western Australia at 2.5. She has trained across 3 states as well as Paris and southern France.
Over a year ago she spotted BWB on Instagram (and fell in love with) the heartwarming mission of Ballet Without Borders. Savannah has been a supporter ever since.
“Without the discipline, determination, hunger to do better - always, motivation and friendships that Ballet training equipped me with - I know I could never be the person I am today. For that I’ll forever be grateful and I sincerely hope that every dancer out there will get the same chance.’‘
In 4 words, what does ballet mean to you?
Discipline, determination, happy-heart and entertaining.
What would be your favourite ballet to dance?
I absolutely loved my first ever variation Giselle and what would be my favourite is to take it en pointe:) I also love to dance my favourite solo of Clara in the Nutcracker.
Do you believe that ballet is a readily accessible art form?
I fear that ballet is still not accessible to all the passionate, hard-working dancers, but I trust with the right people’s help, charity work and social media/internet reach, this gap will start closing.
What do you believe is a typical misconception about ballet that you would like to set straight?
That ballet dancers are unhealthy! I know I speak for so many that we are made of protein to fuel muscles, fruit & veg sprinkled with wholemeal carbs for energy. Now what’s unhealthy about that?!;)
What are you reading right now?
Le Petit Prince
One thing that most people don't know about you?
That I absolutely ADORE dogs and that I used to have a Great Dane bigger than me
Why is the work of Ballet Without Borders so important?
Without the selfless work of Ballet Without Borders, so many outstanding dancers might have gone unnoticed.. through the channels of social media pages I was lucky to get connected with some of them and they are the most talented yet humble individuals.
Favourite ballet to watch?
Soo many. But one extra special - Candlelight Ballet: Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake and not just because my mum & I are experiencing it together for her birthday!
If you could go back to a point in time in your life, what advice would you give yourself?
Start planking and straighten your knees before you can walk!
You have been given an elephant! You cannot sell it or give it away, what do you do?
My first thought was to eat it - one mouthful at a time;)) but then I remembered that elephants bring good luck.. So I’d bring it to every performance, exam and competition for every dancer to pat our ballet community pet!
